If you asked me who I am, I’d simply say: a servant of Jesus Christ.
That really is enough. But if you’re curious, here’s a bit more about why Uncommon Follower exists and the journey God has taken me on.
My name is Joel Singleton. I was baptized when I was 12 and discipled by my father and mother, who ministered faithfully for 50 years. Growing up in Florida and spending my high school years in Miami opened my eyes to the deep need for faithful Christian leaders and disciple-makers in our culture. That calling has only intensified over the years.
I met my wife, Alison, while we were both students at Harding University. We’ve been married since 2005, and she is a clinical psychologist with a heart for helping people find healing. Together, we’re raising our two children, Truitt and Quinn, and learning daily what it means to follow Jesus as a family.
My roots are in the Churches of Christ. I’ve spent 20 years in full-time ministry—first as a youth, family, and associate minister in St. Petersburg, and now as the lead minister at San Jose Church of Christ in Jacksonville, Florida. In 2018, our church began a difficult but Spirit-led journey toward becoming a disciple-making community. We’ve seen God move. Not because we had all the answers, but because we took Him at His Word. We prayed, fasted, restructured, and watched as He began to awaken hearts and multiply disciple-makers in ways only He could orchestrate.
This site was born from that journey.
Uncommon Follower is not about me, and it’s not about building a platform. It’s about equipping everyday believers to live as disciple-makers—people who not only follow Jesus but help others do the same. If you’re tired of cultural Christianity and hungry for a faith that looks like the early church, my hope is that this space will serve you well.
You’ll find no celebrities here, just tools for transformation and stories of how Jesus is still calling people to follow Him… and make others fishers of men.
